From Wayland
The Wayland Fire Department didn’t lose any members of its immediate family on Sept. 11, 2001. But Wayland firefighters joined with firefighters throughout the country in mourning the loss of 343 members of their extended family. Three hundred forty-three firefighters died serving their community in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. Now, the Wayland Fire Department does its part to make sure no one forgets the tragedy and sacrifice of that Tuesday morning 10 years ago. “We will never forget!” reads the banner Wayland Fire Lt. Jim Gemelli and firefighter/EMT Deb Durant hold. It hangs across the bay of a fire engine garage each September to memorialize the people who lost their lives on 9/11. “It’s out of respect for the firefighters and everyone really who died that day,” Gemelli said. “It’s out of respect and so no one forgets.” Brooklyn Lowery

The events of Sept. 11 took place in the northeast part of the U.S. But the impact of that day resonates throughout the country.

Through 911 photos, Patch remembers Sept. 11, and commemorates how it has left its mark on cities and towns across the nation. Here is our photo gallery.
