The Earth Moves Under Wayland’s Feet

At least a couple of locations in Wayland report feeling the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck in Virginia this afternoon.

At least a couple of locations in Wayland felt the earth tremble today when a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck at 1:51 p.m.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the quake’s epicenter was about five miles west of Mineral, Va., which puts it about 530 miles southwest of Wayland.

According to postings on the wall of the Wayland Patch page on Facebook, the quake could be felt at Liberty Pizza in Cochituate as well as on the north side of town at Russell’s Garden Center.

Peg Mallett, who works primarily with the farmers’ markets at Russell’s, said she was totally alone in an office on the third floor when the earthquake hit.

“I heard all this stuff jigging and jingling,” Mallett said, referring to racks on the other side of the wall from where she sat.

Believing herself to be alone, Mallett said she at first thought someone was sneaking up on her. But then she began to wonder, “Why is my body moving?”

With that thought she began to look around and noticed the supports for the third-floor lecture area were moving.

“When you saw floors, ceiling and walls moving, there’s only one thing it could be,” Mallett said. “You could literally see the whole building moving.”

Mallett said others at Russell’s felt the shaking – one woman thought she “just missed” when she reached out to grab something and it had moved, Mallett said – but the people outside at the time didn’t feel a thing.

Andrea Ostar is a bookkeeper at Russell’s said she was standing outside on a concrete slab with two other individuals when the quake occurred. Ostar said they felt nothing and didn’t realize anything had happened until someone ran up and said, “Did you feel the earthquake?”

She didn’t feel it, but Ostar said they saw evidence of it.

“We have these decorative garden stakes with colored balls on them and such, and we looked over at the stand and they were actually swaying,” Ostar said.

Just up the street, not quite a mile north of the Wayland Public Library, is where Kevin Swope said he was when the quake hit, and he reported on the Wayland Patch Facebook wall that he “didn’t notice a thing.”

Wayland's Joint Communication Center said the quake wasn't felt at the Wayland Public Safety Building, and they have only received one call about the earthquake all day.

Did you feel the shaking? What are your experiences?
