TD Bank Applies for Building Permit in Wayland
The permit outlines plans to demolish the current building at 54 Boston Post Road
TD Bank is moving forward with its plan to open a second location in Wayland, this one located at 54 Boston Post Road where a Finagle a Bagel restaurant currently operates.
Wayland’s Building Department received building plans and an application for a building permit from TD Bank on Jan. 11. The application shows that TD Bank plans to demolish the current Boston Post Road building and construct a 3,000-square foot, one-story structure in its place.
“The process is a little bit outside my husband and my hands in that the process takes as long as it’s going to take,” said Finagle a Bagel owner Laura Trust, adding that the managers at the Wayland location know the change is coming.
There are about 10 employees at the restaurant, and Trust said all of them will have the option of continuing employment at another Finagle a Bagel location.
“They will remain employees if they so choose,” Trust said. “We have plenty of jobs in the company.”
Dan Bennett, Wayland’s building commissioner, said he has not yet approved the building permit application – he has 30 days to do so from the date it is received – and is waiting for TD Bank to request a demolition permit. Bennett anticipates issuing both the demolition and building permits at the same time.
TD Bank has already obtained the necessary site plan permissions, so Bennett’s task in approving the building permit is to verify the submitted building plans are in line with the approved site plans.
The land and current Finagle a Bagel building are owned by Trust and her husband. She said they have already completed paperwork for a ground lease to TD Bank and that the process began more than a year ago.
“We think this is an area that has huge prospects for us in terms growth,” said Jimmy Hernandez, a TD Bank spokesperson. “We always look for areas where we think we have growth potential."
TD, which stands for Toronto-Dominion, opened 32 new stores in 2010 and continues to have an interest in expanding, Hernandez said.
Hernandez said that TD Bank generally takes about six months to build a new store, and the company expects to open the Boston Post Road location to customers within the next two years.
“We typically choose locations and areas where there is a strong and skilled workforce in the area,” Hernandez explained, adding that the bank likes to hire locally.
Trust said that the TD Bank offer for the land was too good to turn down but added that Finagle a Bagel plans to “look around” for an opportunity to open a new location in the Wayland area.
“We love the Wayland store [and] we love being in Wayland,” Trust said. “The customer base there is phenomenal.”
An exact timeline for Finagle’s closing or the beginning of TD Bank’s construction is not available at this time.
