Social Media Users Organize to Find Missing Wayland Teen

Facebook and Twitter are being used to spread the word about Allie Loftis, the 13-year-old who apparently ran away from her Wayland home on Nov. 4.

Social media has exploded with news, updates and pleas regarding missing Wayland teen Alexandra “Allie” Loftis.

The “Find Allie Loftis” page on Facebook has accumulated nearly 600 followers on Thursday morning, less than a week since Loftis went missing. Photos of Loftis fill the page along with a plea, apparently written by the 13-year-old’s parents.

“Our daughter Allie Loftis has been missing since Fri night Nov 4th,” reads a post on the page. “Pls help us and forward to all your contacts, we need all the help we can get.”

Facebook user Todd Van Hoosear is encouraging individuals to use Twitter and Facebook to spread the word about the missing Wayland Middle School eighth grader. He suggested in a Facebook comment, “Please RT! #Missing since Friday: Allie, 13 yo #Boston girl, last seen at #NYC Port Auth Bus Term! http://on.fb.me/rsK6yR.” The final URL is a link to the "Find Allie Loftis" page on Facebook.

On Twitter, individuals are reaching out to their circles, particularly their contacts in New York where Loftis was last seen, in an effort to locate the girl. One user, PaulRobertsPAR tweeted, “NY friends especially, please help circulate info on missing 13 year old.” The hashtags #Missing and #NYC are being used.

Loftis’ mother reported her daughter missing to Wayland Police when she returned home from work at about 11 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4. Since then, police have uncovered surveillance footage of Loftis exiting a bus at the Port Authority in Manhattan around 11 p.m. the night she was reported missing. New York authorities believe she may have since traveled to Brooklyn.

Police do not believe there is any foul play in this case, but rather that Loftis is a runaway. The teen is about 5 foot, 4 inches tall, with brown hair and eyes. She has braces and pierced ears.

Wayland Police continue to work with New York authorities on the case.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Wayland Police at 508-358-4721 or the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services – Missing Persons Clearinghouse at 1-800-346-3543.
