Residents and veterans gather Monday morning at the Wayland Veterans Memorial at Wayland Town Building for a solemn ceremony recognizing the sacrifice of Wayland's own.
The memorial at the town building features the names of Wayland residents who died while serving their country. Later this year, a new name will join the list.
John Dyer, a member of the town's Public Ceremonies Committee, announced at the ceremony that the name Garrett R. Domolky will soon be etched into the pillar of names.
Domolky, Dyer said, took his own life while in service.
"Today, military suicide is happening at a rate of one per day," Dyer said, adding that suicide is the No. 1 cause of death among today's service members.
"It is not our role as society to pass judgement," Dyer said. "It is our role to recognize the stress of those who serve in the military."
Dyer acknowledged the possible objections to including on the memorial the names of those who committed suicide alongside those who died in action, but "the criteria used to qualify is simply those who died in service," he said.
Domolky served in the U.S. Army during the 1990s, according to Dyer.
