Incumbents All But Carry the Elections in Wayland (UPDATED)

Grieco bests Jurist for one-year School Committee seat. Voters pass debt exclusion.

The blustery and unpredictable weather didn't stop Wayland residents from showing up to cast their votes in Tuesday’s town election. And most of those voters put their support behind the incumbents.

Two of the three seats open on the School Committee went to incumbent candidates and both open seats on the Board of Selectmen went to candidates seeking re-election.

According to the official election results, current School Committee Chair Louis Jurist came up 80 votes shy of challenger Ellen Grieco to become the only incumbent not re-elected. Jurist earned 1,123 votes to Grieco's 1,203.

In the race for two, three-year terms on the School Committee, incumbents Beth Butler and Barb Fletcher both won seats with 1,411 and 1,274 votes, respectively. Challenger Alexia Obar secured 1,156.

In the Board of Selectmen race, Joseph Nolan and current board chair Steven Correia won re-election with 1,364 votes and 1,313 votes, respectively. Challenger Donald Bustin garnered 925 votes.

In the Commissioner of Trust Funds race, the only other contested position on the ballot, Russell Kopp bested Steven Glovsky by 252 votes (Kopp earned 972 to Glovsky's 720).

When it came to the , 54 percent of voters indicated "yes" in response to the question, "Shall the Town of Wayland be allowed to exempt from the provisions of proposition two and one-half, so-called, the amounts required to pay for the bond issued in order to (i) purchase school technology equipment and (ii) plan and develop additional athletic and playing fields?"

In total, 27 percent of eligible voters (2,434 of an eligible 8,931) headed to the polls today to make their opinions known.

Update: Incumbent candidate Beth Butler was appointed to the School Committee in June 2010, therefore she was not re-elected, but was rather elected for the first time. The article has been clarified to reflect this.
