Governor Signs Legislative Redistricting Bills

Gov. Deval Patrick signed the new districts into law Thursday afternoon.

Gov. Deval Patrick has signed bills establishing new legislative districts for Massachusetts.

The new districts are a result of 2010 Census numbers requiring the new districts be established.

Patrick Thursday signed House Bill No. 3770, “An Act Relative to Establishing Representative Districts in the General Court” and Senate Bill No. 2045, “An Act Establishing Executive Councillor and Senatorial Districts.”

Under the new House maps, Wayland is split between the 13th Middlesex district, represented by Tom Conroy (D-Wayland), and the 14th Norfolk district, represented by Alice Hanlon Peisch (D-Wellesey). Under the previous maps, Conroy represented all of Wayland.

The Senate district maps left all of Wayland in the Norfolk, Bristol, Middlesex district, which is represented by Sen. Richard Ross (R-Wrentham).

”These redistricting plans were crafted with an immense amount of public input and transparency, and they fittingly reflect our Commonwealth’s diversity," said Patrick in a press release. "I am proud to sign them and prouder still that these new districts will give all voters an opportunity to have their voices heard.”

Congressional districts also need to be redrawn, with Massachusetts losing one of its 10 districts, but that work is still in process.
