The Wayland-Weston High Schools girls’ varsity hockey team plays its final regular season game this week. But this year, something is very different. This year the regular season is not the end of ice hockey. The girls have earned their way into post-season tournament play.

Two survivors of four long campaigns, seniors Jess Greenwood and Grace Cartwright are looking forward to their first post-season play.

“It’s been a remarkable turnaround,” said Bill MacDonald, Wayland-Weston girls' hockey coach and the former assistant coach at Harvard College. “These two seniors and I have been in the desert for a long time. They deserve this year.”

And what a year. The WarCats have won 10 games and have qualified for a berth in the MIAA post-season playoff tournament. The addition of eighth-grade goaltending whiz Kylie Ham has bolstered the team along with a squad of eighth graders and freshman who are contributing nightly.

Freshman Elizabeth Dennehy, Katherine Goguen, Gianna Farnogli, Ainsley Gilbard, Jackie McInerney and Ally Nolan have accounted for 40 goals, while eighth graders Lucy Harper, Caroline Goguen and Mary McLoughlin have 14 tallies so far.

Patty Atkinson leads the sophomore class with four goals and nine assists. Juniors Jane Haffey, Sara Coburn and Cara Lembo have provided upperclass leadership. Rebecca Black, Adahlia Babcock, Elizabeth Lichter, Pravina Samaratunga and Emily Hupalo have all contributed on ice for the winning WarCats.

“Having so many skaters is an advantage late in games,” added MacDonald. “So many games are competitive, down to the end. Now we’re trying to finish strong, get ready for post-season play.”

The 10-6-2 WarCats will be in action at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Rivers School rink.

This will be the final home game for Greenwood and Cartwright.

“Grace and I hope you’ll come out to watch us," Greenwood, team captain, said. "It’s amazing. We’re getting ready for the playoffs!”
