Fitness Challenge Means Early Mornings at Happy Hollow Gym

The week-long Fitness Challenge asked kids to get active.

Happy Hollow physical education teacher John Berry doesn't mind a bit of early-morning rambunctiousness if it means teaching his students the importance of leading an active life.

Tuesday and Thursday this week, Berry opened the gym at before classes started and invited students to start their day with some fun physical activity.

"The goal for this is just to reinforce and get kids excited about exercising," Berry said.

The kids jumped rope, raced scooters, climbed and swung from ropes, and even practiced cartwheels and handstands all in an effort to show them that exercise doesn't have to be boring.

"I wanted to do different things," Berry said of the stations he set up around the gym. "I wanted to focus on upper and lower body."

For Berry, the early morning time with the kids is an active jump start to his day.

"The kids are looking to move," Berry said. "It's a lot of fun."
