Dudley Pond Swans Have Four Cygnets This Spring

The nesting swans on Dudley Pond had four cygnets this year.

Tuesday morning was a beautiful spring day, and on Dudley Pond the nesting swans took their four babies — called cygnets – for a swim, poking their long necks underwater to look for food, and paddling about.

In 2011, the swans had seven cygnets, and last year they had five. This year, there are four.

The swans did not appear to venture far from their nest until recently, likely when the cygnets were old enough to swim longer distances. On Sunday, the swans were swimming in the cove near and occassionally a cygnet would climb up on its mother's back for a ride in true swan-boat fashion.
