Domestic Situation Results In An Injured Officer and Arrest
Wayland police respond to a domestic situation.
One police officer was injured and one person was arrested after a morning call reporting a domestic situation in Wayland.
Det. Sgt. Jamie Berger said police responded to a call at 6 Sedgemeadow Road around 9:14 a.m. Tuesday morning. A mother called to report that the father, John Kerrigan, had struck their 5-year-old son. She, along with the 5-year-old and another 4-year-old child, were at the house.
When police arrived, they found Kerrigan to be “uncooperative.” In addition, Berger said that, upon discovering the police had been called, Kerrigan armed himself with a knife.
“When officers arrived,” Berger said, “he was heard making statements that the police were going to have shoot him. We were lucky that we were able to get it under control.”
Police met Kerrigan in a screened porch area of the home, according to a police press release. Rather than cooperating with police, he tried to go back inside the house.
When Det. Christopher Cohen attempted to stop Kerrigan from closing the door to the house, Cohen’s hand and arm went through a pane of glass, resulting in two serious cuts and his being transported to the hospital, Berger said. Cohen has since been released.
Kerrigan was arrested, after a “brief struggle,” according to the press release. He has been charged with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon (the knife); one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a chair that was apparently used to strike the 5-year-old); and one count of domestic assault and battery.
He was in his arraignment hearing at Framingham District Court late Tuesday afternoon. No further information became available before the clerk’s office closed.
