Date Set for Pelham Island Bridge Closure

The bridge will close next month.

State Department of Transportation officials have confirmed that the Pelham Island Road bridge will close to traffic on Feb. 27 to begin reconstruction.

Detour signs will be posted Feb. 21. Once the bridge closes, the contractor will begin work on a temporary bridge to carry utilities across the river for the duration of the project. This bridge will not be for traffic of any kind.

The contractor estimates completeing the utility bridge on or about March 16, and, at that point, will reopen the Pelham Island Road bridge to traffic temporarily.

Construction on the bridge itself is expected to begin on or about May 1, and the roadway will then be closed again. The project schedule calls for the new bridge to be in place by November of this year.

The current bridge, which spans the Sudbury River near Route 20, is a temporary structure that has been in place for about 10 years. It's demolition and the construction of a new bridge is being completed as a state project and costs the town no money.
