Bear Spotted in North Wayland Tuesday

Bears have been spotted in Wayland and the surrounding area.

It's that time of year: The time when the birds start coming to your bird feeders ... and so do the bears.

Tuesday evening, Wayland Police responded to a report of a black bear sighting on Three Ponds Roads. Wayland Dispatch said the bear wandered into the woods and that the Environmental Police responded to the area.

Then, at about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, WaylandeNews posted on its Facebook page that the bear had been sighted in the Claypit Hill area.

These sightings came just a day after Weston resident Isabella Jancourtz told Patch she saw a black bear walking along her driveway on Gun Club Lane, a street just a mile from the Wayland line.

And the Lincoln Police Department Monday tweeted that a bear had been spotted near routes 126 and 117.

Jancourtz said she contacted Weston Police who told her numerous reports of bears had come in lately. She said police advised that "people bring bird food in and cover their trash well, keep their doors shut and leave the bear alone."

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife provides these additional tips for living with bears.

The bears emerge each spring and cause varying amounts of ruckus. Remember the Brookline Bear last spring or the bear that caused a shelter in place order for Wayland schools in 2011?

Have you spotted evidence of a bear in your yard this season? Are you taking precautions to keep bears out of your yard?
