Accident Causes Minor Injury to Officer, Damage to Cruiser

The accident occurred last week as the officer was responding to a call.

A Wayland police officer has been cleared to return to work after sustaining injury in an accident Sept. 28 while responding to a call.

Officer Tyler Castagno was responding to a call on Sept. 28 when he lost control of his cruiser along Old Connecticut Path and hit roadside bushes and a tree.

Wayland Police Chief Bob Irving said Castagno had his lights and siren on when a stopped car pulled out in front of him. Castagno attempted to avoid a collision, but lost control on the wet pavement.

Castagno was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, but was cleared to return to work after two days. The police cruiser is currently undergoing repairs to minor damage.

"We're fortunate he doesn't have any significant injuries," Irving said, adding that minor accidents for police officers aren't terribly uncommon given the number of calls to which they respond. "These things happen."
