  • Survived by: daughters, Lizette Hill and her husband Christopher of Wayland, and Mercedes G. Jimenez and her husband Manuel of FL.; brother, Leonardo Canton and sister, Pilar Canton Sanchez, both of FL.

She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 6 nieces and 10 nephews. Her family would like to acknowledge her loving caregiver Edilt Rivas.

Born in Cuba, she was the daughter of the late Leonardo Agapito Canton and Mercedes Vigo Malet.

She was the beloved wife of the late Aldo Gil Sanchez.

She was predeceased by her brother, Leonardo Anselmo Canton.

Mercedes received her Masters in Spanish and Bilingual education. She was a retired teacher and former Director of the Bilingual Program for the Clinton Public Schools.

Visitations will be held on Monday, April 9, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Rd. (Off Rte 30), Wayland. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Parish at St. Zepherins Church, 99 Main St (Rte 27), Wayland. Interment will follow in the Gil family lot in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellesley.
